A 24-year-old Victoria man died Sunday afternoon after being hit by a truck on the Pat Bay Highway near the Royal Oak overpass.

Saanich Police say the man was walking beside the southbound lanes of the highway with his bicycle at about 3 p.m., when he stepped into traffic and was immediately hit by a truck.

Police say that the driver “had no opportunity to avoid the collision” and that the man died at the scene.

Following the incident, the southbound lanes at Haliburton Road were closed until approximately 9 p.m. while collision analysts conducted their investigation

Police say the death is not considered suspicious, and that the driver of the truck was not injured in the incident and will not be facing any charges.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC has been notified of the incident as both Saanich Police and Victoria Police had contact with the man one day prior to the incident for mental health concerns.

“This was a very traumatic event that has affected many people and Victim Services is involved,” said Saanich Police in a release. “Our condolences go out to everyone impacted by this man’s death.”
