Victoria HarbourCats kick off their 7th season with a Free Fan Fest today

Share

The Victoria HarbourCats will showcase another set of “firsts” this weekend, as they embark on their 7th season in Victoria, including a free “Fan Fest” today.

Saturday night, June 1st, will mark the return to Wilsons Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park for the 2019 HarbourCats squad.

And for the first time ever, they’ll play in the inaugural Alumni Classic game, against a team made up of former players, as well as other prominent players that have called, or call Victoria home. The game starts at 6:35 p.m.

Then on Sunday, June 2nd, the HarbourCats host what they are calling a “split-gate double-header”. This means fans can choose one game on Sunday, or the other – or both – but each will have a separate entry fee.

More firsts

The afternoon game is set for a 1 p.m. start and it’ll be another first. The first time in West Coast League (WCL) history that a US-based team has played a visiting team from Cuba.

US trade restrictions with the Caribbean nation make a game on US soil either complicated or impossible, but the HarbourCats’ friendly off-field relationship with Matt Acker’s Port Angeles Lefties means the US WCL team will travel here to play Cuba.

At 6:35 p.m. on Sunday night, the HarbourCats will take the field against the same Cuban team in the nightcap. The Cuban team hails from Union de Reyes, in the province of Matanzas, in the western part of the country.

After they play in a large international tournament in Grand Forks next week, they will return to face the HarbourCats again on Monday, June 10th in Victoria.

Additional firsts we recently learned about include a new fan zipline installed in the park, and a free Fan Fest scheduled for this afternoon and evening, starting at 4 p.m.

Special features

The zipline was revealed earlier this week. It’s actually a twin set of lines, running from the top of the “soccer grandstand” down to new poles installed at the northeast corner of the park.

Fans attending any HarbourCats game – all season long – can ride the zipline at a cost of $12.50, when booked in advance.

The Fan Fest today features an appearance by horses Titan and Major from Victoria’s Tally-Ho Carriage Tours, HarbourCats players on the field, and hot dogs and drinks for just $1 each.

It’s free to attend, and kids can bring along their ball gloves, for the opportunity to play some catch with ‘Cats players.

Fans can try the zipline tonight for a special discount price of just $10. There are no advance zipline pass sales at tonight’s special price.

Tickets for all the games, as well as zipline passes are available online HERE or at the HarbourCats office at 1814 Vancouver Street, right by the ballpark.

Senior discounts, Co-Op Member discounts, Save-on-Foods vouchers and Forces Fridays are just a number of additional ways to save on HarbourCats tickets this season.

Details on these promotions can be found HERE.
