A teenager from Lansdowne Middle school has succumbed to his injuries after a tree fell on him during school trip near Sooke.

The Greater Victoria School District confirmed the death in a letter that has since been posted on Twitter.

In the letter from the Superintendent, it states that a Critical Incident Response team has been deployed to support students, staff and family.

The students were on field trip at Camp Bernard near Sooke on Wednesday, and it was just after 3 p.m. when emergency crews were called to an area close to the Jack Brooks Hatchery for a report of a person trapped under a tree.

The Sooke area was experiencing high winds around the time of the incident.

One other person was reportedly transported to the hospital and remains in critical condition.

The name of the teenage boy who died has not been released.
