On July 18th, Saanich Police said they were performing a road safety project at a playground zone in the 4400-block of Emily Carr Drive where the posted speed limit is 30 km/h from dawn until dusk.

At about 4:10 p.m., a vehicle was spotted speeding down the street at 63 km/h, more than double the posted speed limit.

Officers then pulled the vehicle over and found that the male driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was also impaired by alcohol.

Police then issued a 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition, a violation ticket for speeding in a playground zone, and impounded his vehicle.

“Impaired driving is still occurring on our roads in Saanich,” said Detective Sgt. Damian Kowalewich, Saanich Police, in a statement.

“This summer has already resulted in numerous Motor vehicle incidents involving alcohol. Our Traffic Safety Unit will continue their enforcement and roadblocks are expected to continue and increase throughout the summer.”
