West Shore RCMP arrested a 50-year-old man after a five-hour standoff at a Langford housing complex Tuesday evening.

At approximately 5:00 p.m., West Shore RCMP received reports of an armed man who barricaded himself inside a residential building on Station Avenue near Peatt Road.

Police quickly surrounded the area and blocked off surrounding streets. Meanwhile, residences in the neighbourhood were evacuated.

During the evacuation, police say that a gun was fired from within the suspect’s residence.

Shortly after the gunshot, at approximately 9:30 p.m., officers and RCMP negotiators took the man into custody. Police also seized a number of firearms and ammunition for the property.

No injuries were sustained by either the police or the suspect in the arrest.

“This was a dynamic situation which required us to mobilize both West Shore RCMP officers and Island District resources quickly,” said Staff Sergeant Raj Sandhu, of the West Shore RCMP.

“The situation was contained and residents were evacuated for their safety. We want to say thank you to the Royal Canadian Legion (Langford Branch), who opened their doors and allowed displaced residents to wait inside while police responded to the scene.”

Police say the investigation is ongoing, and charges are expected to be put forward soon.
