36-year-old man arrested for stealing Saanich municipal work truck

Police have arrested a 36-year-old man after he stole a Saanich municipal work truck on Thursday.

The truck was stolen at approximately, 4:30 p.m. on August 15th. About 20 minutes later, an Oak Bay Police officer spotted the truck being driven on Beach Drive at Dalhousie.

When they attempted to pull the stolen truck over, the suspect failed to stop and eventually pulled into a driveway near Cavendish Ave.

At that point, the man got out of the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. Oak Bay PD members set up around the area and were soon joined by a K9 unit from Saanich Police.

They were able to successfully locate and arrest the suspect at around 5:50 p.m.

“With prolific offenders such as this, one can only imagine what that pick up truck was going to be used for in our community. Thankfully, one of our keen eyed members spotted it before he was able to further victimize anyone,” said Oak Bay PD Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties.

“We have a fantastic working relationship with Saanich PD and this is just another example of how well that works.”

According to police, the 36-year-old man is a prolific offender who is prohibited from driving and was wanted by VicPD.

As a result of this incident, he will be charged with numerous offences including Failing to Comply with Conditions, Flight from Police, Theft over $5000, and Possession of Stolen Property over $5000.
