A Victoria man was arrested this weekend after he barricaded himself inside a stranger’s home, causing a prolonged police standoff.

On Saturday, at approximately 10:00 p.m., VicPD was called to the 1100-block of Yates Street for reports of a man inside a suite of an apartment building.

The property owners told police that they did not know who the man was, and that he was allegedly causing “extensive damage” to the unit.

VicPD then dispatched officers and the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team, which includes crisis negotiators to the scene. Once police arrived, however, the man refused to exit the suite and began barricading himself inside.

With the man entrenched in the suite, crisis negotiators began speaking to him over a “portable public address system”.

After a few hours at a standstill, police obtained a warrant and entered the suite, taking the man safely into custody.

No injuries were reported throughout the incident and the man is facing several charges, including mischief.

The investigation is ongoing.
