It will be a special kind of homecoming for former Victoria Royals captain Matthew Phillips tonight.
Phillips, who played three full seasons for the Royals and was a fixture as captain and fan-favourite for Victoria, was drafted by the Calgary Flames’ in 2016 – and it was announced this morning that he will be joining the Flames’ roster tonight in their pre-season game versus the Vancouver Canucks.
Though he attended Calgary’s training camp last year, the team sent him to the American Hockey League with the Stockton Heat for a season of development – there he scored 13 goals and 25 assists in 65 games.
