Mountain Equipment Co-op has announced that all of their retail locations across the country will be closed on Friday in support of Global Climate Strikers in Canada.

In a letter posted online last week, the company’s CEO Phil Arrata announced that MEC stores will be closed until 5 p.m. local time on Friday, September 27th in order to allow company staff to participate in the strikes.

Next Friday will see the culmination of a week of climate strikes that started on September 20th with hundreds of thousands of people around the world taking to the streets to demand climate action from their governments.

However in Canada, the largest national climate mobilization is expected to occur on September 27th.

As Canada’s leading outdoor retail co-op, we are deeply concerned. We have known for a long time that operating our business and selling products has an impact on the planet,” writes Arrata.

“This is the first time we are doing something of this magnitude and we understand the decision may impact members who have already planned a visit or booked services at one of our stores.” Arrata wrote.

The week-long climate strike protests are timed to coincide with a UN General Assembly meeting in which countries vow to increase their efforts to reduce greenhouse gases in ratification of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
