Victoria Police have arrested a man who barricaded himself inside a residence for several hours on Wednesday.

At around 6:15 a.m. on September 4th, police responded to reports of an intoxicated man standing in the middle of the road in the Shelbourne/Begbie Street area.

Once officers arrived, the man tried to flee in a stolen vehicle and in the process rammed multiple parked cars including one police vehicle. Fortunately, no one was injured during this phase of the incident.

The man then abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot to a residence on Begbie Street where he barricaded himself inside.

Police soon called in the Greater Victoria Emergency Team and negotiators, who worked to resolve the situation peacefully.

After several hours, they were able to obtain a warrant to enter the residence after which GVERT took the suspect into custody without further incident.

Vehicle traffic was disrupted in the 2200 block of Shelbourne Street and BC Transit bus routes #27 and #28 were rerouted for several hours as police dealt with the situation.
