UPDATE: In an update at 10:15 a.m., VicPD stated that they were responding to reports of an intoxicated man standing in the middle of the road in the Shelbourne/Begbie Street area.

Once police arrived, the man tried to flee in a vehicle and in the process rammed multiple parked cars including one police vehicle. Fortunately, no one was injured during this phase of the incident.

The man then abandoned the vehicle, which was stolen, and fled on foot to a residence on Begbie Street where he is believed to be barricaded inside.

The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team has been called to assist, and negotiators are now attempting to speak to the man via loudspeaker.

EARLIER: A section of Shelbourne Street has been closed due to an ongoing police incident.

As of around 6:15 a.m. this morning, Victoria Police have been working to arrest a man in the 2200-block of Shelbourne Street.

The area is closed to all traffic as police engage in a standoff with the suspect, who is being arrested in connection with an ongoing investigation. Members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team are also on site.

BC transit buses #27 and #28 have been rerouted to avoid the block.

Expect traffic delays or take an alternate route.
