46-year-old man sustains life threatening injury after assault in downtown Courtenay

A man was found unconscious on a sidewalk after sustaining injuries from an assault in downtown Courtenay.

At around 1:25 p.m. on November 19th, Comox Valley RCMP responded to reports of an assault in the 350-block of 6th Street.

Upon arrival, they found a 46-year-old man lying unconscious on the sidewalk with a serious head injury. He was transported to the hospital by Emergency Health Services.

According to RCMP, the man was at the Vancouver Island Regional Library with the suspect before the two got into an altercation that resulted in the victim sustaining the injury.

“This is a busy area in Courtenay and we are looking for witnesses who may have seen the dispute between these two men, a disturbance at the library, or may have video or dashcam footage from around the time of the assault,” said S/Sgt. Glen Breckon.

Police believe that this was not a random incident, and have identified a person of interest.
