The manager of a Nanaimo store suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries after being assaulted by a shoplifter on Saturday.

At around 5:45 p.m. on Saturday November 23rd, Nanaimo RCMP and paramedics attended the business at North Town Centre Mall for reports of an assault.

According to witness reports, the manager of the business was speaking to the suspect outside the store after observing him taking items without paying for them.

After a short period, the alleged shoplifter struck the manager with his shopping bag, which contained several bottles in it.

The suspect then fled the scene on foot and was last seen running towards Lowes.

Paramedics transported the store employee to a hospital to be treated for his head injury, before being released later that day.
