A man was arrested early Monday morning in James Bay by the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) after assaulting an officer and barricading himself inside his apartment.

The suspect has been transported to a hospital for mental and physical health assessment after a six-hour standoff with GVERT officers after damaging his building and assaulting a Victoria PD officer.

The officer in question was able to finish their shift after incurring the injuries.

Just before 10 p.m. on Sunday, December 22nd, Victoria PD officers were called to a residential building on the 200-block of Oswego Street after a report of disturbance. Upon arrival, several residents informed officers that a man was causing damage to the second floor hallway.

The man began attacking officers as soon as they approached him in the hallway, injuring one of the officers.

Next, the man retreated into his suite and barricaded himself inside. Residents were evacuated and GVERT were deployed. Crisis Negotiators began working with the man, who refused to cooperate and resolve the incident peacefully.

After hours of negotiations — just before 4 a.m. on Monday morning — GVERT officers entered the suite. The man was taken into custody and transported to hospital.

He is currently being held while the investigation is active. Residents have returned to their suites.
