Earlier: One person was taken to hospital with life threatening injuries after a fire in downtown Victoria.

Just after 6 p.m. on Christmas Day, December 25th, Victoria Police responded to reports of a person who was allegedly armed and causing a disturbance.

They had barricaded themselves in a suite inside a multi-unit residential building in the 700-block of Pandora Ave by the time police arrived.

Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team (GVERT) officers were deployed, but by the time they arrived, authorities observed smoke coming from the suite.

Crews from the Victoria Fire Department then extinguished the flames before GVERT officers entered the suite and took the suspect into custody in life-threatening condition.

Paramedics transported them to hospital where they remain in life-threatening condition, and an investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Police watchdog, Independent Investigations Office, has been notified of incident and the case is now under their jurisdiction.
