A woman is dead after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy road in Port Alberni Wednesday night.

RCMP say the pedestrian was walking across 3rd Ave near Bute St around 5:35 p.m. when she was hit by a northbound car.

An SUV had been travelling northbound on 3rd Ave when it collided with the pedestrian. Police say she was not in a marked crosswalk and it was a dark and rainy evening.

Witnesses and bystanders in the area provided emergency first aid to the pedestrian until first responders arrived.

Sadly, the pedestrian had succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Police said the driver of the SUV remained at the scene to assist police in their investigation and was not impaired or injured in the collision.

The RCMP Collision Reconstructionist and the BC Coroner Service attended the scene where the road was closed to traffic for several hours. It has since re-opened.

The crash remains under investigation and no further details are available at this time.

Anyone who witnessed this collision and has not spoken to police yet is asked to contact the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424.
