Sooke student hospitalized after accident in front of Edward Milne Community School

A high school student in Sooke was taken to the hospital after being struck by a motor vehicle at 8:00 a.m. this morning outside of Edward Milne Community School.

An email sent to ECMS parents from SD62 superintendent Scott Stinson says the student was in stable condition, though the extent of the injuries is unknown.

Classes at the school are ongoing but a Crisis Incident Response Team is on site and working with students who may have experienced trauma, the email reports.

In a press release, Sooke RCMP says the student was struck while walking across the crosswalk on Sooke Road from Lazzar Road. First responders administered care at the scene before transporting the teen to a Victoria hospital.

The driver involved remained on the scene and was very concerned for the student, says Sgt. Clayton Wiebe in the statement.

Alcohol was not a factor in the incident, though officers are still attempting to determine whether the crosswalk light was activated or if the student was in the crosswalk at the moment of the incident.

“This investigation is still ongoing to determine what caused this collision,” Sgt. Wiebe says.
