The crash took place at around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 10th, on the north-west corner of Gabriola Island.

In a press release on December 17th, the BC Coroners Service reported that a couple in their early 50s had died in the crash, but did not confirm their identities.

Investigations by the BC Coroners Service are ongoing regarding the cause of the crash.

In their daily incident report (named CADORS, or Civil Aviation Daily Occurrence Reporting System), Transport Canada detailed the reason behind the crash as a “Mechanical/technical malfunction of aircraft.”

The airplane “reported an equipment issue and deviated from the approach prior to dropping off of radar,” the CADORS summary reads.

There were no fatalities or injuries reported among people on the ground.
