5 things to do in and around Victoria today, Friday January 10th

You made it to Friday, Victoria! Why not enjoy that weekend feeling with a host of amazing events happening in town, from the ice-cold Save-on-Foods Arena to see the Royals play against the Portland Winterhawks to the spicy-hot BenDeLaCreme and her variety show at the McPherson Theatre.

There’s something for everyone to enjoy in this Things to Do list! 

Victoria Royals vs. Portland Winterhawks

The Royals return to Victoria after two weeks away, and they play a new opponent for the season in the Portland Winterhawks. Portland have only lost seven times all season, putting them at the top of the WHL’s US Division. It will be a tough match-up for the Royals, but some wins against a good time will be great for momentum leading into the business end of the season.

BenDeLaCreme and the Vivacious Variety Show

BenDeLaCreme featured on the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, finishing fifth and winning the “Miss Congeniality” award as the season’s nicest and most helpful drag queen, before appearing once again in the third season of RuPaul’s All-Star Drag Race. 

She joins forces with burlesque troupe Mod Carousel for a “Vivacious Variety Show” on January 10th that is sure to be a theatrical extravaganza of storytelling, dancing, singing, and comedy!

Pablo Cardenas plays Oscar Peterson

In a career spanning more than 60 years, Canadian jazz pianist and composer Oscar Peterson released over 200 recordings, won eight Grammy Awards, and received numerous other awards and honours. He is considered one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time and continues to inspire and challenge new generations of jazz musicians.

This Friday, the sensational Pablo Cardenas brings his top band to reproduce many of Oscar’s most famous and loved performances.

When Raven Became Spider

Coming to Open Space after a critically-acclaimed nation-wide tour, When Raven Became Spider brings together work from six Indigenous artists who transpose supernatural beings from Indigenous stories into the realm of superhero comics. The exhibit was first shown at the Dunlop Art Gallery, Regina Public Library. The Open Space iteration of the show will feature new works by island-based artist Sonny Assu.

Art Battle at the Victoria Event Centre

Twelve talented artists will step up to the easel tonight to battle for artistic supremacy in 3 fast-paced rounds. 

Watch the creative process unfold before your eyes and help vote for the winner, featuring great music and even better company. You can also purchase the paintings after the battle!
