5 things to do in and around Victoria today, Friday January 3rd

Music, sports, or politics — 2020 events are already as wide-ranging as possible! 

But if you’re still clinging on to that Christmas feeling, don’t worry. The Centennial Square Lights of Wonder are still up for two more days, so grab a friend (romantic or otherwise) and go revel in the sparkling set-pieces! 

Here are five things to do in and around Victoria today, Friday January 3rd!

Candidate Meet and Greet

With a city council by-election looming, now is the time to talk to the potential politicians and help decide who will be our next councillor. 

Together Victoria, the organization which endorsed three city councillors in the previous election, is choosing a nominee to replace new MLA Laurel Adams. With snacks and a cash bar, the candidate meet and greet is your chance to meet the nominees and decide who could fill that prestigious position. 

  • When: January 3rd, 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 
  • Where: Norway House, 1110 Hillside Avenue

Cotis w/ Connor Phillips

You may not necessarily think of rap talent when you think of Vancouver Island, but COTIS is posed to help change that. The young hip-hop artist is making waves online with his pop and rap songs, and he’s playing a rare all-ages hometown show for his dedicated fanbase in town. 

  • When: January 3rd, 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.
  • Where: Victoria Event Centre, 1415 Broad Street

UVic Vikes Basketball 

Ring in the New Year with some of the best local sports you can watch. The UVic Women’s Basketball team (6-2) face the 1-9 UBCO Heat to continue their run up the Canada West standings, and after finishing 2019 with five straight wins, the UVic Men’s Basketball team are looking to keep their run going into the new decade. 

This is high-stakes basketball, played by top Canadian athletes, costing as little as you could ask for!

  • Where: CARSA Performance Gym, Mackenzie Avenue and Gabriola Road 

Lights of Wonder 

From December 20 through January 4, Centennial Square will become a visual, playful lightscape. Lights of Wonder is a magical urban oasis where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together and celebrate the season. 

Admission is free, though donations are accepted, so residents and tourists alike can enjoy Lights of Wonder as many times as they like.

  • When: December 20th through January 4th, 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. 
  • Where: Centennial Square, 1 Centennial Square

Heckler’s Charity Comedy Night

Why not feel good and do good at the same time? 

The Jor-Dawn Smith Bursary Fund is dedicated to providing financial assistance to youth in Victoria, BC to attain post-secondary school without the financial barriers holding them back. The organization is hosting a comedy fundraiser at Heckler’s to raise enough money for one high school student who is passionate about furthering their education.
