Fourth annual Women’s March is happening in Victoria this weekend

The annual movement that saw hundreds taking to the streets of downtown Victoria is returning for its fourth year.

Women’s March 2020 is scheduled to take place around the world this Saturday, January 18th and as always, Victoria promises to be an enthusiastic participant.

The Victoria chapter of the Women’s March events was spearheaded by Dr. Katrina Sark and Cayla Naumann, and in the past has featured themes like ‘End Violence Against Women’, and ‘Looking back, moving forward’ which, like this year’s theme, focused on highlighting the struggles of marginalized women.

This year’s theme is #WomenRising2020, which encompasses “the ongoing struggles faced by women, marginalized genders, and 2-Spirit peoples, while continuing the ongoing call to action to fight for rights and representation for these peoples,” according to a press release.

The Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ territories (Victoria) Women’s March will begin with speeches on the Legislature lawn followed by a march down to Bastion Square where the event culminates in musical performances and a final speech.

Around 1,000 people participated in last year’s Women’s March, and a similar number of people are expected to show up for the cause this Saturday.
