British Columbia’s police watchdog is investigating the arrest of a man in Victoria after he was injured in the process.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC is seeking witnesses after an arrest near Inner Harbour led to one man being injured.

At around 10 p.m. on February 16th, Victoria Police officers arrested two men on the wharf near the Harbour Air seaplane terminal in front of the restaurant Red Fish Blue Fish, according to an IIOBC statement.

One of the men resisted arrest and after a struggle, was taken into custody.

“The IIO was notified later that evening and clarified that the male had sustained an injury which met the definition of serious harm,” reads their statement.

“The focus of the IIO investigation is determining what role, if any, the officers’ actions may have played into the serious harm of the male.”

In a phone call with Victoria Buzz, VicPD spokesperson Bowen Osoko clarified that as this investigation has been taken over by IIO, police can no longer comment on the case.

No details have been released about the reason why the two men were being arrested in the first place.

Anyone who witnessed the arrest, including a witness who assisted officers during the arrest, is asked to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477.

IIOBC is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm of death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
