It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for.

BC Ferries has kicked off the month of March with an announcement that will bring the company into the 21st century.

The statement on Monday morning confirmed the arrival of new PIN pads at vehicle and foot passenger ticketing areas at BC Ferries terminals, meaning passengers will soon be able to start using debit as a form of payment for their ferry tickets.

This new technology will also allow customers to use the Tap payment feature for both credit and debit cards while purchasing tickets.

BC Ferries representatives stated that the company was waiting until tap technology was available before installing debit machines, and expects the upgrade to speed up transactions.

“The installation of the new PIN pads is currently underway throughout the fleet and expected to be completed by spring 2020,” reads the statement from BC Ferries.

Customers using the larger, more popular terminals – Swartz Bay, Departure Bay, Horseshoe Bay, Duke Point and Tsawwassen – will have to wait until the end of March 2020 to access debit and tap payments.

BC Ferries is first installing the technology at smaller terminals.
