Island Health is notifying people of potential exposure to COVID-19 at the University of Victoria and Saanich Commonwealth Place.

The health authority said those who attended three classes at UVic on March 12th, as well as those who went to the swimming pool at Saanich Commonwealth Place on March 12th, may have been exposed to the novel coronavirus.

Also, anyone who attended a kickboxing class at Saanich Commonwealth Place on March 15th may have been exposed as well.

The three classes at UVic are:

  • Psych 300B A01, beginning at 11 a.m.
  • Psych 351B A01, beginning at 1 p.m.
  • Biol 367 A01, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

People who attended the swimming pool at Commonwealth Place on March 12th, between 5 and 7 p.m. may have also been exposed to COVID-19.

In addition, people who attended a kickboxing class at Saanich Commonwealth Place on March 15, between 8:15 a.m. and 9:15 a.m., may have been exposed.

A statement from University of Victoria President Jamie Cassels confirms that an upper-level UVic student tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Cassels, the student lives off campus and is now recovering at home.

“With a campus population of nearly 30,000 people and as the number of cases in BC continues to grow, it was not unexpected that at some point a member of our community would contract the virus,” writes Cassels.

“Together, we are doing everything we can to  prevent or slow the transmission of this virus.”

UVic joined universities like SFU and UBC in shutting down in-person classes and switching to online courses last week.

Island Health says the people who attended these locations are at low risk and they note other recreation facilities at Commonwealth Place are not impacted.

People who attended the aforementioned classes and the recreation centre are asked to monitor themselves closely for symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, fever, sore throat and difficulty breathing.

Anyone experiencing these symptoms is asked to self-isolate for 14 days following the onset.
