Victoria police officer buys ferry ticket for stranded woman

A stranded woman has been reunited with her family in Northern B.C. after a Victoria police officer purchased a ferry ticket to get her home.

On Wednesday, a VicPD officer was called to the 800-block of Burdett Avenue for a report of an emotionally distressed woman.

While speaking to the woman, the officer learned that she had travelled from Northern B.C. to Victoria with a man, who had then left her on her own.

The woman, who police say is intellectually disabled, was not familiar with the area and had difficulty navigating the city. She was unable to find a shelter and did not have any money.

The officer was able to get in touch with one of her relative who then travelled from the southern interior to pick her up.

The officer, not wanting the family member to have to take the ferry back and forth to Vancouver amid the COVID-19 pandemic, drove the woman to the ferry and purchased her a ticket.

The woman’s relative picked her up at the BC Ferries Tsawwassen terminal in Vancouver and brought her home.

VicPD said the woman’s family was grateful for the assistance of the officer.

“I really appreciate what the officer did,” said one relative. “He helped out a lot.”
