Nanaimo teenager Lauren Spencer-Smith has continued to impress American Idol judges with her melodies, so much so that she has now found herself as a top-20 contestant on the show.
The 16-year-old songstress originally wowed legends Luke Bryan, Katy Perry, and Lionel Ritchie speechless after her initial American Idol audition during which she performed her rendition of ‘What About Us’ by P!nk.
She’s not new to the music scene either, and has been captivating Canadian audiences with her voice in recent years, even earning a JUNO award nomination for Adult Contemporary Album of the Year for her debut album, ‘Unplugged, Vol. 1’.
On the April 5th episode of the hit reality TV show, Spencer-Smith was selected by judges to advance to the next stage of the competition.
Half of the 40 contestants were eliminated during this episode, filmed at Aulani Disney resort on O’ahu this past winter, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Lauren performed Aretha Franklin’s ‘Respect’ and was able to not only captivate the audience, but also blow away the superstar-studded panel of judges.
“I’m so overwhelmed,” said Spencer-Smith during the show.
“It means a lot. I’ve worked really hard and it’s nice that I get to prove to people that I can do this.”
