Sadly 3 additional deaths were reported today, all on the mainland, bringing the death toll in B.C. to 58.

In good news, a total of 905 people have now recovered from novel coronavirus in B.C.

There continue to be COVID-19 outbreaks at 20 long term care centres on the mainland, the hardest hit of which is the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver. This includes a total of 246 active cases at these facilities, including 153 residents and 93 staff members.

Out of the 35 new cases confirmed today, 26 of them are part of an outbreak at a federal correctional institution in Mission, B.C. Five people from that facility have also been hospitalized due to COVID-19.

In responding to concerns about travellers over the long weekend, Dr. Henry clarified that she has spoken to BC Ferries on the subject of concerning numbers of non-essential travellers.

“They do report that, for one the ferries are only allowed to carry 50% of capacity and we know that the schedule has been dramatically reduced. They did confirm that they’re only seeing a fraction of the traffic that they would normally on this weekend,” said Dr. Henry.

“There are many reasons why people may need to travel, whether it’s for family or to check up on people. I think we all need to be patient and kind with people.”

She adds that there is no need for any need for stepped up enforcement or lockdowns as Dr. Henry believes most people travelling are doing so for legitimate reasons.
