BC SPCA calls for donations for six German Shepherd puppies abandoned near Port Alberni

Six eight-week old puppies were found abandoned and ridden with infections in a remote area near Port Alberni.

According to the BC SPCA, a passerby heard the puppies’ cries as they wandered alone in the area, and alerted the non-profit organization.

“The poor little pups were in rough shape,” says Lorie Chortyk, general manager of communications for the BC SPCA.

“They were undernourished, with eyes crusted shut with infection when they were rescued, but they were still wagging their tails and were so sweet.”

The SPCA says the pups were found suffering from severe demodex mange, secondary skin infections, conjunctivitis, ear infections, worms and were infested with fleas.

Four of them will need entropion surgery — entropion is a condition in which the eyelid is rolled inward against the eyeball, typically caused by muscle spasm or by inflammation or scarring of the conjunctiva, and resulting in irritation of the eye by the lashes — and two of the puppies will need this surgery in both eyes.

So far, all six have been receiving antibiotics, daily baths for their mange, as well as other treatments.

The costs associated with their care is expected to exceed $4,000 prompting the BC SCPA to reach out for donations.

The puppies are now resting in foster care and as they will need several weeks to recover, are not up for adoption at this time.

“They are so well-behaved and are happy, energetic puppies,” said Chortyk.
