Share

Firefighters are actively battling a structure fire in the Esquimalt area this evening.

The fire broke out around 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 30th at an apartment complex in the 1300-block of Esquimalt Road.

VicPD are assisting in blocking roads, and are asking people to avoid the area at this time.

Witnesses on scene tell Victoria Buzz that everyone inside the building at the time of the fire was able to escape.

One person has been transported to hospital due to smoke inhalation.

One witness, Tina Cheaney, said the victim “walked out okay, but he was on the balcony when the flames started pouring out.”

“I was outside nearby when I could smell something burning. Saw smoke at 6:58 p.m. and called the fire department,” she added.

”It is right near the base fire hall and while I was on the phone, their sirens went so I thought they were responding but realized it was now 7 p.m.”

More to come.
