Motorcyclist suffers life-threatening injuries in Nanaimo crash Monday

Nanaimo RCMP are investigating after a motorcyclist was seriously injured in a crash Monday afternoon.

The collision, which involved a car and motorcycle, occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Hammond Bay Road and Stephenson Point Road.

During the investigation, police learned that a 17-year-old female driver attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Stephenson Point Road from Hammond Bay Road.

As the vehicle made the turn, it collided with a 47-year-old motorcyclist who was travelling northbound on Hammond Bay Road.

According to RCMP, the rider sustained life-threatening injuries.

He received medical treatment on scene by BC Paramedics and was transported to a local hospital. Once the man is stabilized, he will be airlifted to a hospital in Victoria.

The driver of the car and her two passengers were not injured and remained on scene after the collision.

The driver of the car and the motorcycle rider are from the Nanaimo area.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene and will undergo mechanical inspections.
