Saanich beaches and trails remain open to the public during long weekend

The District of Saanich continues to encourage people in the community to stay healthy and active during the upcoming long weekend.

They also ask that people do so while still observing provincial health orders and recommendations surrounding COVID-19.

It’s recommended that people stick close within their neighbourhoods, but the district also reminds the public that Saanich’s beaches and more than 170 parks and 100 kilometres of trails remain open for everyone to safely enjoy.

“We want families to have fun and enjoy themselves as much as possible during this challenging time,” said Mayor Fred Haynes.

“There are many ways to stay active and still follow physical distancing and provincial health orders. I know we all appreciate that our personal behavior over this coming weekend will directly impact how we can flatten the COVID-19 curve and keep our communities and loved ones safe.”

Mount Douglas Park’s gate on Churchill Drive will be closed over the long weekend, from April 10th to April 13th in anticipation of an increase of park visitors over the weekend.

The gate will reopen April 14th, during regular hours of noon until 11 p.m.

Saanich’s playgrounds and outdoor recreation facilities will continue to remain closed over the long weekend.

This includes all outdoor facilities such as lacrosse boxes, tennis courts, basket and sport courts, along with the Cedar Hill Golf Course and the Lambrick Skate Park.

The District of Saanich has launched a specific COVID-19 enforcement team, in hopes they can aid the public in adhering to provincial health orders related to gatherings of over 50 people.

To report a concern, you can call 250-475-5456 (Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), email bylaw@saanich.ca, or fill out the Report a Problem form on Saanich.ca.
