Global response needed to repair economic damage done by COVID-19: Trudeau

It’s all hands on deck, so to speak, when it comes to recovering the economy across the globe, according to Prime Minister Trudeau.

At a United Nations conference on Thursday morning, Trudeau started off by saying a coordinated response for the global economy to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic is necessary.

“For the global economy to recover and for our domestic economies to bounce back we need a global, coordinated plan,” Trudeau told over 50 heads of state and government at the conference.

The Prime Minister was referring to the current pandemic as an international crisis; one with many different layers.

Without a coordinated global action plan, the UN estimates the COVID-19 pandemic could cut nearly $8.5 trillion from the world economy over the next two years, as well as see 34.3 million people forced into extreme poverty in this year alone.

Trudeau stated to the United Nations conference that “our citizens need to have confidence in international institutions that leave no one behind and are capable of overcoming global challenges.”

Earlier in the week, Trudeau reiterated that Canadian jobs and businesses are reliant on how other nations respond to COVID-19 economically.

“Canadian jobs and businesses depend on stable and productive economies in other countries, so it matters to us how everyone weathers this storm,” he said Tuesday.

Thursday’s United Nations conference addresses six areas of action necessary for a global recovery, including maintaining financial stability and calling on private-sector creditors to aid in recovery plans.

Canada is also currently competing for one of two non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council against Norway and Ireland. The UN vote is set to happen next month, and Canada is running on a platform of trying to help rebuild the post-pandemic world.
