Police seek suspect in Oak Bay break and enter, theft from vehicles

Oak Bay Police are searching for a man who allegedly broke into the storage area of an apartment building and stole a 90-litre backpack and used it to store items stolen from vehicles.

In a statement on Monday, police said that at around 5 a.m. on May 20, an officer observed a suspicious man riding a bicycle wearing a 90-litre backpack in the parking lot of the Monterey Recreation Centre in Oak Bay.

When the officer started to question him, he ran away after which a police K9 unit was deployed to search for him.

However the suspect could not be located and police believe he fled the area on another bicycle. Police did retrieve the 90-litre backpack, inside of which they found another bag containing items stolen from vehicles in the south Oak Bay area.

Officers were able to track down the owner of the backpack and the other stolen items.

Investigation revealed that the owner stored his backpack in the in the bicycle storage area of his apartment building.

The same suspect was seen in surveillance footage from the apartment building and was determined to have broken into the storage area earlier that day.

Officers are now working to identify the suspect.
