Missing 100-pound gargoyle statue in Nanaimo returned to rightful owner

Share

When it comes to theft, gargoyle statues aren’t generally something you see stolen every day.

But sometime during the night on Wednesday, May 27th, that’s exactly what happened to a Nanaimo homeowner and her gargoyle named “Petey”, who’s been guarding the home for many years.

Thankfully, Petey was returned to his rightful owner on Thursday morning by police, who say that the statue was found at Nanaimo’s public works yard.

Nanaimo RCMP say suspects went to a lot of effort to steal Petey, who usually sits perched on the back deck of the residence on Nicol Street.

And it would have been no easy feat, as the gargoyle weighs in at 100 pounds, stands 2 feet tall and has a wingspan of almost 2.5 feet.

Thieves kicked out a wood fence panel that surrounded the backyard, the owner told police, then made their way to the deck and grabbed Petey.

Now that the statue has been returned home, he’s back on guard duty atop the water fountain in his back yard.
