A woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a vehicle collision in Nanaimo over the weekend.

In a statement, Nanaimo RCMP say police, paramedics, and firefighters attended the scene of a two vehicle crash at around 7:10 p.m. on June 14, on Highway 19A in front of the Country Club Mall.

Before first responders arrived, witnesses assisted the 34-year-old woman and commenced emergency first aid. However she did not survive her injuries and died at the scene.

She was the driver and lone occupant of an older model Hyundai. Her vehicle collided into an SUV occupied by a man and a woman, both of whom received minor injuries as a result of the crash.

In talking with witnesses, investigators have determined that the victim’s vehicle was travelling southbound on Highway 19A when it swerved and struck the median before landing in the northbound lanes and crashing into the SUV.

Three out of the four lanes at the site of the crash were closed to traffic while first responders and BC Coroners Service attended.

The investigation is currently ongoing and both vehicles were removed from the scene. The older model Hyundai will undergo mechanical inspection.

Police are asking anyone with dash cam footage of the incident to contact the Nanaimo RCMP Traffic Unit at 250-754-2345 and quote file number 2020-21446.
