Multiple bear sightings reported in Saanich, near UVic

Saanich Police have reported several bear sightings Thursday night and Friday morning.

Residents near the University of Victoria are cautioned to be vigilant as authorities are responding to sightings of a bear in the area.

In particular, a bear was spotted wandering in the UVic Student Housing area.

“The British Columbia Conservation Services have been informed and will be attending the area to investigate and monitor the situation,” reads a statement from Saanich Police.

In a phone interview with Victoria Buzz earlier this week, conservation officer Scott Norris said this has been an unusually busy year for bear activity, as authorities have been receiving an average of 10 bear-related calls per day.

All Saanich/CRD residents are reminded not to approach bears if they see one, and instead go to a safe place and report the sighting.

B.C. residents can report all wildlife-human interactions that put the public and animals at risk by calling 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP) or #7277 on the TELUS Mobility Network.

More information about safety measures can be found on the WildSafeBC website.
