One person was hospitalized and a 20-year-old driver issued several tickets after a vehicle crashed into a tree in Oak Bay.

At around 12:45 a.m. on June 18, an Oak Bay police officer stationed at Beach Drive clocked a Ford Mustang driving 73 km/h in a 40 km/h zone.

Seeing this, the officer engaged the lights on his vehicle and turned onto Beach Drive. About 350 metres down the road, the Mustang crashed into a tree.

The driver and two passengers were not injured, however a fourth person in the vehicle was taken to hospital by paramedics for fear that they suffered a possible vertebrae injury.

The driver, a 20-year-old woman, was an ‘N’ driver and therefore not allowed to have three passengers with her. According to police, she had also been consuming alcohol but her blood alcohol level was not high enough for her to be considered impaired.

Police issued five violation tickets: Drive without due care, Speed in municipality, and three counts of Drive Contrary to Restrictions.

Her vehicle also contained stickers stating things like “Street racing is not a crime, well it is but f*** it”, and “Yes officer, I did see the speed limit sign (I just didn’t see you)”.

“The stickers on this car are indication of how immature and unaware some drivers are. This driver endangered the lives of her passengers and others and ultimately injured one
of her passengers,” reads a statement from Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties.

Due to the possibility that police involvement may have led to the death of one of the passengers, the Independent Investigations Office was informed of the incident.

However since then the passenger with injuries has been released from hospital, and their injuries were not deemed serious.

IIOBC will now determine whether to assert their jurisdiction in this case.

Oak Bay PD also notified the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner OPCC, who are now investigating and will provide an update on whether or not they will be investigating the actions of the police officer.
