Campfires and backyard burning banned in Sooke as fire danger rating raised to ‘extreme’

Share

The District of Sooke has placed a fire ban on all open air burning as the Fire Danger Rating for the Sooke Catchment area has been raised to “Extreme.”

“Extreme Fire Danger” means that forest fuels are extremely dry and new fires can start easily, spread rapidly, and will challenge fire suppression efforts.

All open air burning including campfires, backyard burning and beach fires is prohibited within the District of Sooke until further notice.

The District says that people are still permitted to use propane ring fires.

The ban on all open air burning in Sooke further restricts fires on top of a provincial ban that has been in place since July 24.

The provincial fire ban currently prohibits all Category 2 or 3 open air fires throughout all of Vancouver Island.

This includes bans on fireworks and fires larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres.

Details on current provincial fire bans and information on different fire Categories can be found online at the BC Wildfire Service website.
