Man arrested after allegedly assaulting restaurant staff member in downtown Victoria

A man originally from Edmonton has been arrested by Victoria Police for a series of crimes.

At around 10 p.m. on July 16, officers were called to the 1100 block of Douglas Street after staff at a restaurant encountered a man who dined and dashed, and then returned to the business a short time later.

The staff member took out his phone and threatened to call police if the suspect didn’t pay his bill. That’s when the suspect assaulted the staff member, and then fled the scene.

The victim reported not being physically injured during the assault.

While patrol officers were out searching for this suspect, a VicPD K9 unit responded to reports of a break and enter at a hotel in the 1200-block of Wharf Street.

The caller reported that a man had thrown an object through a front window and was now inside the lobby area.

Once the VicPD K9 unit arrived, they spotted the suspect trying to gain access to the hotel’s office area.

The suspect then tried to flee on foot, but was captured after a brief foot chase and taken into custody. Patrol officers then realized that the same suspect was involved in the first assault case.

He was arrested and taken into custody before being released. Police say the investigation into these incidents is ongoing.
