Victoria seeks planning proposals in first step towards downtown innovation hub

The City of Victoria is calling for planning proposals in the first step toward creating a maritime industry hub in the downtown core.

The Ocean Futures Innovation Hub is a planned project in partnership between the City and the South Island Prosperity Partnership.

Intended to house companies in the ocean and marine sector, the hub is part of Victoria’s economic reinvention plan titled “Victoria 3.0.” and will be located downtown with the intention of boosting the city’s maritime economy.

The $8M sale in June of the “Apex” land site at the corner of Douglas and Humboldt for the construction of a landmark Telus Communications facility is also part of Victoria 3.0.

“This initiative will lead to the growth of a strong regional ocean and marine ecosystem that supports business needs throughout the innovation continuum,” said Alex Rueben, Executive Director of the Association of BC Marine Industries (ABCMI).

“It will foster an entrepreneurial environment conducive to innovation, growth and global competitiveness.”

The partners say that proposals are now being accepted to develop a plan for the hub, including a feasibility study and business case that will be presented to industry professionals.

Proponents of the project say that it represents a vital step in diversifying the city’s economy and post-COVID-19 recovery.

“Victoria harbour and the marine highway are strategic assets that are unique to our region,” said Sage Berryman, Co-CEO Ralmax Group of Companies.

“The Oceans Futures Innovation Hub has the potential to be the cornerstone of the region’s pathway to post COVID-19 economic recovery.”

Last month, Ralmax Group of Companies purchased a majority share in Victoria Harbour Ferry through an investment that ensured the company could continue to operate.

Information on the submission process for proposals is online at southislandprosperity.com

Proposals must be received before 11:59 pm PST on August 21, 2020.
