B.C. government seeks public feedback on proposed Highway 1 improvements at Goldstream park

The provincial government is looking for feedback from British Columbians on proposed safety improvements along the Trans-Canada Highway at Goldstream park.

A 1.7 kilometre stretch of the highway near Finlayson Arm Rd is being examined for new safety features to protect drivers and visitors to the park.

Proposed improvements include:

  • widening and minor realignment of the stretch of road to accommodate the installation of median barriers, wider paved shoulders, roadside barrier and improvements to the Finlayson Arm Road intersection; and
  • enhancing and protecting an existing trail overlooking the river parallel to the highway, improved parking and trail network connections, a pedestrian bridge over the Goldstream River and a safe pedestrian highway crossing structure.

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says that the highway will remain one lane in each direction and retain existing right-of-way, with no adjustments to park boundaries.

Members of the public are invited to offer feedback and submit questions through an online questionnaire at www.gov.bc.ca/malahatsafetyimprovements.

The improvements in Goldstream park are part of the ongoing Malahat Improvement Project, first begun in 2016.

The ministry says that over 60 per cent of the Malahat corridor is now median divided, with only Goldstream park and a four-kilometre section near the summit between Split Rock View Point and Bamberton still undivided.

Data collected by the ministry shows that over 29,000 people drive through Goldstream park via HIghway 1 every day.

Traffic has increased by nearly 4,000 cars a day over the past 10 years.
