Friends and family of a woman who drowned at Matheson Lake in Metchosin on July 21 have created a GoFundMe to support the two young children she left behind.

The deceased woman has been identified as 32-year-old Michelle Gerrand, in a GoFundMe account created to cover unexpected funeral cost, and build an RESP (Registered Education Savings Plan) fund for her two children, aged 10 and 5.

In a Facebook post, Gerrand’s sister expressed how deeply her death has affected those who knew her.

“Our hearts are shattered, and life will never be the same for our family or the many people who were blessed to know the firecracker that was Michelle Gerrand,” writes Julia Gerrand.

She encourages everyone who knew her sister to post any memories or pictures of her on her Facebook page.

Gerrand’s family and friends have also expressed their gratitude for the bystanders, paramedics, and Victoria General Hospital staff in keeping their loved one alive long enough for her mother, sister, and daughter to say goodbye.

BC Coroners Service is still investigating the circumstances surrounding her death.

The GoFundMe on her behalf aims to raise $25,000 and as of the time of publication has already garnered over $22,000 since it was created nine days ago.

“Michelle was a truly gentle soul. She had an innate love for animals of all kinds,” reads the fundraiser.

“Despite not having a lot of money herself—she had great compassion for anyone in need around her.”
