A person who went overboard from a BC Ferries vessel was quickly rescued by a joint operation, according to a spokesperson for Royal Canadian Navy MARPAC (Maritime Forces Pacific).
MARPAC Communications Officer Janice Lee told Victoria Buzz in an interview that the call for a man overboard came in at 11:28 a.m. from BC Ferries’ Coastal Inspiration.
The Coastal Inspiration provides service along the Duke Point – Tsawwassen route.
“There was a pleasure craft in the area, so BC Ferries called them for assistance,” says Lee. “JRCC (Joint Rescue Coordination Centre) sent the coast guard hovercraft Siyay.”
Lee says that the pleasure craft was already in the area and with their support a BC Ferries lifeboat was able to recover the person at 11:41 a.m.
The incident occurred about 15 miles northwest of Tsawwassen Ferry Terminal.
At 11:57 a.m., BC Ferries tweeted that the arrival of the Coastal Inspiration from its 10:15 a.m. sailing would be delayed due to the emergency.
#BCFHeadsUp #DukePoint – #Tsawwassen #CoastalInspiration will be delayed for the arrival of the 10:15 am due to assisting w/a marine emergency. We appreciate your patience. ^oj
