6 new electric vehicle chargers will be installed in downtown Victoria

The City of Victoria announced it will be installing six new curbside electric vehicle (EV) chargers on Broad Street, between Pandora Avenue and View Street.

Construction will begin on the Level 2 EV chargers immediately. They will be installed in pairs with two per block and will allow for up to 90 minutes of charge.

The City says this charge time will be sufficient to drive an average EV approximately 50 kilometres.

The new chargers are being partially paid for by the federal ZeroEmission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, in partnership with BC Hydro.

“It’s clear that Victoria residents are increasingly choosing electric vehicles,” said Mayor Lisa Helps.

“This is a practical solution to support a reduction in GHGs, but also to provide another incentive to come downtown and support our local businesses.”

The city owns and operates 13 public Level 2 chargers, located in each of the Victoria’s five parkades, in groups of two to four.

The Broad Street chargers will be the first owned by the City that operate on-street.

Victoria’s Council has committed to expanding charging networks as part of the City’s Climate Leadership Plan. The plan also calls for 30 per cent of vehicles registered in Victoria to be power by renewable energy by 2030, and 100 per cent by 2050.

The provincial CleanBC plan requires the sale of all new light-duty cars and trucks to be zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) by 2040.
