These are the most popular searches on Google in Canada this fall season

The fall season is finally here after a hot (and smoky) summer and Canadians have started to embrace the season.

To celebrate, Google has released search trends for Canada ahead of this autumnal season and, like it or not, the Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) features heavily.

Google has released trend reports in the past at the end of the year to look back on the past 12 months. They’ve also looked at National Ice-cream Day, and National Dog Day related search results, but this is the first year they’ve decided to look at fall trends in Canada.

“We didn’t do a deep dive into last year, but we were excited to look at it this year and see what Canadians were looking for, whether that be warm beverages or activities they were looking at,” said Christina Peck from Google Canada.

According to Peck, Canadians were searching for warm beverages and activities and Canada even out-searched the U.S. for the PSL.

The good old classic latte was the number one searched fall beverage for all of Canada, followed by apple cider and the beloved PSL.

British Columbia, however, broke the mould from the rest of Canada by having hot chocolate in second place, followed by apple cider, with the latte still taking the first place spot, according to the trend report.

Other categories included the most searched fall activities and most searched fall how to’s. When it came to fall activities, there was a wide range of searches recorded, from family-oriented activities to activities for older people, said Peck.

Canada’s most searched fall activities included hiking, winery and brewery visits, bike riding, antiquing, fruit picking, and corn mazes.

In this category, British Columbia stayed true to the rest of Canada, with the top three searches in the province being hiking, wineries, and breweries.

Peck thinks that these searches are so popular right now not only because of the season, but also because people are looking to rediscover where they live.

“Fall is a great time for a lot of people to reset, and I think this year in particular we’re seeing people are spending more time at home and it’s a great way to rediscover their own neighbourhoods or cities,” said Peck.

On top of looking for activities to do in the fall, it seems that people are looking to get a head start on Thanksgiving when searching for fall-themed how to’s.

All of the most-searched fall how to’s were food-related, including searches like ‘how to cook spaghetti squash’, ‘how to cook corn on the cob’, ‘how to cook beets’, and ‘how to boil corn’.

For those who want to look at further Google search patterns, Google’s Trends website is available for the public to do just that.

All you have to do is visit the website, search a term or phrase, and find trends for different countries at different times.
