Police called to landlord-tenant dispute at Saanich house that went up in flames hours later

Saanich Police say that a house on Carey Road that went up in flames early Thursday morning was also the subject of a landlord-tenant dispute hours earlier.

Officers attended a home in the 4100 block of Carey Road for a report of a landlord-tenant dispute at 10 p.m. on September 9. They say they were unable to locate any occupants and cleared the scene.

Just over two hours later, at approximately 12:30 a.m., Saanich Police returned to the area to assist Saanich Fire with a structural fire at the same home.

Deputy Chief Frank Macdonald said that crews worked to extinguish the blaze until 4 a.m.

He said the damage to the home was “extensive” and the fire is being treated as suspicious.

“It is too early to determine if there is any correlation to the report called in to the home last night and the fire hours later,” said Cst. Markus Anastasiades. “There was nobody in the home at the time of the fire.”

Saanich Police say the investigation is ongoing.
