One man has died in a tragic workplace accident this afternoon.

In a statement released at around 5 p.m. September 22, Victoria Police say they, along with paramedics, attended reports of a workplace accident in the 800-block of Government Street.

The incident took place at the Customs House, which is currently under construction, where the man was initially reported to have suffered potentially life-threatening injuries at the work site.

However the man succumbed to his injuries soon after the accident was reported. BC Coroners Service has been notified of the incident.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and those affected by this incident,” reads the statement from VicPD.

“Victims Services are available by calling 250-995-7351, or 24 hours through Victim Link at 1-800-563-0808.”

Police initially shut down traffic in the area, including Government at Belleville and Broughton at Douglas.

While most streets are now open to vehicles, traffic continues to be disrupted in the 800-block of Government Street.

Police say they are in the early stages of their investigation into the incident and more information will be provided when it becomes available.
