RCMP are investigating after a 70-year-old Nanaimo man was punched in the head over a parking spot dispute.

Police and paramedics responded to the incident, which happened sometime between 7:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on August 20, 2020, in the Lowe’s parking lot at North Town Centre Mall (4750 Rutherford Road).

The victim, a South Asian man, told investigators he was parking his vehicle in a designated handicap spot. The man’s spouse has significant physical disabilities.

As the victim was parking, an unknown man approached him and took exception to where he was parking.

The man then punched the victim in the head with enough force to knock his turban off, without any provocation.

The suspect shouted profanities at the victim and ran off in the direction of Tim Horton’s.

The victim was assessed on scene by paramedics but did not require treatment.

The suspect is described as a white male, 5 feet 7 inches, slim build, with dark hair, wearing a light coloured shirt and pants.

“Based on the evidence gathered to this point, investigators do not believe this incident was racially motivated,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2020-30474.
