Police have released the name and photo of a suspect they believe is responsible for a recent break-and-enter where a handgun was stolen.

The Nanaimo RCMP are asking the public for help to locate 32-year-old Michael Leighton, who is wanted on one count of assault in Saanich and ten property-related offences in the Comox Valley.

In addition, Leighton has been identified as a suspect in a recent break and enter and theft from Nanaimo on September 27.

During that incident, thieves pried open the door to a storage area in the 6000 block of McRobb Avenue and broke into multiple storage lockers.

Among the stolen items were an estimated $40,000 in Canadian silver coins and a Ruger MK .22 calibre 111 semi-automatic target pistol.

Leighton is described as a white man with dark hair, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds.

Police say he sports a beard and moustache and often ties his hair in a man bun.

Leighton is also associated with a silver/white 2008 Mercedes with BC plate KW512L.

Anyone with information on Leighton’s whereabouts is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
