Former Tofino Mayor Josie Osborne was projected Saturday evening to win the Island riding of Mid Island-Pacific Rim, leading with over 50 per cent of the popular vote.
Osborne was first elected mayor in 2013, and re-elected in 2018 with 87 per cent of the votes cast.
In September 2020, she announced her intention to seek the BC NDP nomination for the riding of Mid Island-Pacific Rim.
The nomination was left vacant after Minister of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation Scott Fraser said he would not be seeking re-election.
Osborne said in September that she wanted to work with the NDP during the province’s pandemic recovery.
“At the heart of my passion for public service are my strong convictions that governments must serve all people, not just some people,” she stated.
“Here in British Columbia we must shape our future together with Indigenous peoples.”
Osborne’s win means a by-election will be necessary to replace her current position as Tofino Mayor.
